“All great things must first wear terrifying and monstrous masks in order to inscribe themselves on the hearts of humanity.” – Friedrich Nietzsche

What are you looking at?

Amsterdam-based artist Alexander Tempel creates work that exists at the intersection of abstraction, figuration and realism. Are they portraits? Or are they masks? Each one of us wears a mask, sometimes revealing more than the face itself. Are they man, woman, something in between? How do they look? What are they looking at? His works never fully reveal themselves at first glance, inviting you to keep looking and discovering new layers.

While studying law, Alexander realised that there was more to life than textbooks and began painting in his student room. The decision to do so proved successful. Today, his works have been sold around the world. A variety of works, from intimate drawings to large-scale canvases, can be seen at Bunk through mid October.
