Created by two passionate creatives in 2023, the Pride Art Route is an initiative coinciding with Amsterdam Pride that gives LQBTQIA+ artists a chance to showcase their work in all kinds of surprising places around Amsterdam. And Bunk is one of them again!
This year, explore two series about trans and non-binary folks by World Press Photo winner Prins de Vos and fellow photographer Jasper Groen.
In the photo series On Hold, Prins de Vos portrays a realistic picture of people who often spend years on waiting lists for gender clinics. This is a period in which life feels “on pause” and is a true ordeal for non-binary and trans individuals seeking (medical) support. The portrait of Mika, taken when he had been on the waiting list for 22 months, won a World Press Photo Award last year and is one of De Vos’s works on display at Bunk Hotel Amsterdam.
In his series I exist!, Jasper Groen focuses on transmasculine and non-binary people in Russia, Kenya, and Colombia. Many of them do not have access to gender-affirming care and frequently face (legal) exclusion and aggression from society. Trans men and non-binary people are less visible in public debate than trans women, but they exist—and Groen highlights this through powerful portraits.
Jasper Groen began his photographic career as a self-taught artist with an internship under Erwin Olaf. Prins de Vos, in turn, interned with Jasper Groen. This marks the first time the two exhibit together. Their work has previously been shown at Foam, Fotomuseum Den Haag, Melkweg Expo, and many other venues.
