Each woman today is standing on the shoulders of the women who came before us. And we can’t let Women’s Month pass without acknowledging the women who love women that have propped us up along the way.
We’ve teamed up with Roze Filmfestival for a special screening of the woman-directed Italian feature film Io Non Sono Nessuno, a tribute to – and the real-life story of – Mariasilvia Spolato, the first openly lesbian activist in Italy. A successful maths teacher and proud feminist, Spolato publicly declared her homosexuality at a Women’s Day march in 1972 – the first woman in Italy to do so – costing her both her job and her relationship with her family. Despite her ensuing hardships, she held steadfast in her convictions and activism, co-founding movement and magazine Fuori! – an acronym for the United Revolutionary Homosexual Front of Italy.‘ The film serves to give her the recognition that eluded her in own lifetime.
As if that weren’t inspiring enough, for this co-produced screening only, we will be joined by film director, Geraldine Ottier, for a special Q&A. See the Roze Filmdagen site for more details.
